Incubator Preparation:
- Clean the incubator thoroughly before use.
- Set the incubator to the correct temperature and humidity levels (specifics for each type below).
Allow the incubator to run for 24 hours before placing the eggs to ensure stability.
Egg Selection:
- Choose clean, fresh eggs for hatching (not older than 7 days).
- Do not wash the eggs as this can remove the protective bloom.
Setting the Eggs:
- Place the eggs in the incubator with the pointed end down.
- Turn the eggs at least three times a day to ensure even development (automatic incubators will do this for you).
Temperature and Humidity:
- Maintain consistent temperature and humidity levels (details below).
- Keep the incubator closed as much as possible to maintain these conditions.
Candling:
- Candle the eggs around day 7 and day 14 to check for development.
- Remove any infertile eggs or those that have stopped developing.
- Lockdown Period:
- Stop turning the eggs around day 18.
- Increase humidity slightly to help the chicks hatch.
Hatching:
- Chicks will begin to pip (break the shell) around day 21.
- Allow the chicks to hatch naturally and do not help them out of the shell.
Brooding:
- Transfer hatched chicks to a brooder with a heat source (heat lamp).
- Ensure they have access to food and water immediately.
